Key Problems With Public Education Systems

By Dora Reed

One of the most crucial investments one can make is education. This high level importance comes with high costs too. Learning is very costly and therefore not all can afford it. Without any form of help majority of people would not have the ability to read and write at all. Mostly the poor and middle class population is affected by these high costs.Below are main Problems With Public Education.

Necessity being the mother of all inventions, this need gave birth to the ideology of public school learning. These are institutions where learning is offered at no cost. The costs are transferred to the state or nation as the case may dictate. This form of free learning is mandated by the law for certain age categories. This system suffers a number of key problems.

There is a problem of low levels of discipline in these schools. Several cases of indiscipline go into record each day. These cases require a lot of resource to solve and this poses a distraction. The fact that punishment has been prohibited makes matters worse for the teachers. Students involve themselves in illegalities with no fear of the consequence.

The presence of the organization of union of teachers poses another major problem. This union does very little if at all the asses the competence of the teachers in these schools. This negligence causes teachers to careless about the learning of pupils in these schools. Due to these unions, public schools have very incompetent and lazy teachers to say the least. This discourages even the determined and caring teachers.

There is also a loss of focus on the basics of education. It is another major problem of a system. A wide range of disciplines are taught and exercised in these schools. This is not bad on its own but it leaves very limited time for the basics to be accomplished. A child might be good at so many other activities but sucks at reading and writing exercises. This is a clear indication that the priorities of a system are not in line with those of education.

This system also puts too much concern on age as a classing module. Students are put into classes with age as a distinguishing factor as opposed to the use of skill and ability. This again creates a major problem as pupils end up in classes but without the necessary skills and abilities to keep up with the academia of the class. This is a major headache cause for the teachers.

Lack of adequate competition amongst students in these schools is another problem. This is caused by the teachers who not only tolerate but also encourage mediocre performance. This denies the slow students the motivation to work harder. It also makes the brilliant students to not work for the best. This lack of competition and desire for better is a major setback in these public schools. Competition is a healthy aspect of learning and growing environment.

Last but not least is the total disregard for rules and regulations in these learning institutions. Learners do as they wish in the school environment. Talking in classes, random movements without permission and missing of sessions are some of the vices. In conclusion these are some of the key setbacks in public schools.
