Real Truth Behind Black History Magnets

By Karina Frost

Behind every little thing that came to be is an inspiring story. It may look simple, ordinary and even cliche the first time but when you realize the meaning behind it, you will know how important it is for certain individuals. Like the magnets that has pictures of every known African American person, if you look closer and search the internet harder, you would know that these simple magnets are a representation of the contribution that they have done to America.

Black History month, as the Americans call it, is the culmination of every thing that the colored race has contributed to the world. It serves as a recognition of all they had offered and the black history magnets are their symbols. African American History month as it was later called was an event that the people could celebrate the African American personalities who made an impact on their lives and the important events in the past that serves a milestone to the freedom they are experiencing today.

This event started 100 years after slavery in the United States ended. Carter Woodson and Minister Jesse Moorland were the first ones who launched this event. The month February was chosen so that it would correlate to the birthday of another African American icon Frederick Douglass and President Abraham Lincoln as well.

Before, this function only lasted for a week. It was also known as the Negro History Week. Then later on, as the event garnered more attention, in the 1960s to be exact, the event was celebrated for the whole month. When Gerald Ford, recognized the celebration, many were glad. And the tradition continues up to this day.

From this single event, many organizations were born. These organizations are responsible for the advancement of the development of their individuality and their lifestyle in general. One known organization is the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or the NAACP.

United States went through dark times and one of them was when white people enslaved black people. Not treating them as human beings but as possessions that can be disposed of anytime. When slavery ended, there where a lot of people who suffered from discrimination because of their color. Despite everything, these people stood up for their own and triumph. Along the way they made great discoveries and contributions to the society as well.

When President Ford approved the event during 1976, a lot of activities were held. Up to this day, the government still encourages the people to take part in the activities during the month. Many communities and schools create programs that will teach the future generation of what the black people have offered to the world. And this is so that racism and racial discrimination would be forgotten.

The impact of this great race has influenced not only United States but the world as well. Most of them have inspired us with their stories and words and some have touch other the souls of other people through their music. Which is why it is only fitting that they be given the credit for everything that they have done.

The magnets and the other memorabilia sold during this time of year are not just simple items. It represents the struggle of the Negro people in their fight for freedom and equality. Once you know the story behind a small thing, you would be able to see its value.
