Finding Elementary Reading Tutors For Failing Students

By Jocelyn Davidson

Being able to read is an indispensable skill. No one can do without it, whether they need to succeed in a career or follow the directions that come with their new appliance. Although this skill should be the focus of early learning, school days are often fragmented with many activities, and teachers are often overwhelmed by having too many children in their class. Fortunately, elementary reading tutors are available to help.

Learning in a crowded classroom can be difficult, especially for children who are easily distracted. Others may be inhibited from progressing and performing by fear of competition with their peers. It's difficult even for parents to understand all that goes on in a child's head, and teachers are faced with coping with thirty or more students at one time.

Tutoring provides one on one instruction. Lessons can be structured for a particular child. For instance, a boy who can't sit still can run around the room and shout out the letters or the phonic sounds of each flash card. Usually, once a child breaks through the initial lack of either comprehension or cooperation, progress is rapid. There are certified professional tutors who will come to your home, where this kind of flexibility is feasible.

There are also learning centers, where students can go after school and find the same personalized help. Having the undivided attention of an adult whose only desire is to help a child succeed can work wonders. Learning centers also have tested and proven methods to help students read, comprehend, and develop critical thinking skills.

Really, anyone who is literate can be a tutor. In fact, with the right tools, anyone who speaks the language can help another to learn. Older children can help younger ones; this happens in some schools with mentoring programs. This is beneficial to both of the children, the older one who gets a sense of accomplishment from helping and the younger one who gets individual attention and hopefully a good role model.

Organizations offer help for those who cannot afford a private tutor or a learning center. Churches often encourage their members to volunteer. Public and private libraries may sponsor programs to help kids learn to love books and reading. Phonics, a very effective method for teaching language skills, is not difficult at the elementary level. Basically, letters and groups of letters are displayed on flash cards. The student learns to identify the letter, its sound, and the way it sounds in combination with other letters. This enables them to sound out unfamiliar words and read them successfully.

Parents, of course, can serve as tutors to their own kids. Just the act of reading aloud to them encourages a love of reading and a realization of the wealth of adventure, knowledge, or fantasy wrapped up in the written word. Helping children learn their letters and simple words is easy for all who are literate. If there is a problem for both parent and child, outside help may be needed.

One on one teaching is the key to success for many children, no matter how that teaching is arranged. There's a great classic called 'Why Johnny can't Read' that can help parents understand the benefits of tutoring. This knowledge can help them select the right program for their young one. There is no reason to let a child fail when there is so much help available.
