Asking For College Essay Assistance

By Olivia Cross

Many young people the world over from Sydney, Australia to Stamford CT, USA, dream of going to college and earning a degree. Not all students are prepared for the hard work and essay writing. Some need to get some college essay assistance either from other students, academic professionals and essay purchasing website.

These websites should be avoided at all costs. Buying essays on line is plagiarism, that is, stealing intellectual property. On a good day, plagiarism will result in a failed essay. On a bad day you could be thrown out of college or even arrested. Plagiarism is a minefield, and buying an essay is the easiest offense to identify. If you copy and paste ideas without referencing the original writer, or pretend their ideas are your own, then you are guilty of plagiarism.

This does not mean that you cannot use the ideas of other scholars, experts, websites or even television shows. If you do use someone's ideas then you must reference them. Referencing can be the bane of any college student's life, but without referencing there is no way of verifying the ideas in the essay. There are different ways of referencing ideas: through direct quotes ("Caligula killed his mother"), or paraphrasing (It is said Caligula killed his mother). Whichever is used it must be followed by a reference, either in text or in the footnotes (author date: page). This may make the essay longer to write but it means other people can verify your facts.

So now we can forget about plagiarism and referencing and get to the interesting part of the essay, the research. This is difficult, complex but can be fascinating. Sadly you have to read three times as much as you need for every essay. Chasing references is fun. If one text provides some referenced information you can follow this original source and analyse this yourself. Perhaps you will interpret the information differently to other authors. If you do you have the basis for the argument of your essay.

Perhaps you do not agree with a well-known argument, or side with one argument in an academic debate. It is important to explain the reasons why you disagree. You need to demonstrate the known evidence in support of your opinion or evidence disproving other arguments. Avoid sweeping generalisations (all women are bad drivers)unless you can prove it to be true, and be able to reference it.

Although making your arguments is essential for an A* essay, it is essential that the essay answers the question being asked, not the question that you want to answer. It may seem obvious but it is very easy to get distracted by research that interests you, but is not actually what is needed.

Once you have answered the question, written an introduction, argument and conclusion you are nearly ready to hand the essay in. All you need now is the bibliography; a list of all books, websites and articles referenced in the essay. This is NOT a list of everything you read for the essay. At least a third of the stuff will not have been relevant. Remember you must check school style guides to see how to layout references and the bibliography.

Hand your essay in on time, but leave time to proofread it first. It would be a shame to lose marks due to bad spelling, missing or repeated words.
