The Five Boroughs Of NYC Traffic Report

By Iva Cannon

New York City is composed of five boroughs, each of which is coterminal with a single county. These five boroughs are: The Bronx, Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. Whatever the time of day, even at three o'clock in the morning, a live map of the NYC traffic report will show serious congestion at the intersection of the three inner boroughs, Manhattan, Queens and Brooklyn.

New York City is the center, both literally and figuratively, of the New York metropolitan area. It is also the gateway through which legal immigrants enter the United States. Regarded by many as the financial and cultural capital of the world, it is a designated global power city. The United Nations is located here, as are two major league baseball teams, pro basketball and hockey, and two NFL football teams, the Giants and the Jets.

Of all five boroughs, Brooklyn is the most populous with 2.6 million people. It is the second largest in terms of geographical area, Queens is the biggest. It shares the same boundaries as Kings County. Brooklyn is connected to the Borough of Manhattan by the Brooklyn Bridge, which was completed in 1883. Brooklyn has been an entity in New York for more than 350 years.

The second-largest New York borough, and the largest in terms of land mass, is Queens. Located on the northeastern boundary of Brooklyn and occupying the same land space as Queens County, Queens is home to approximately 2.3 million people. Notable people from the Borough of Queens include Donald Trump, entrepreneur and television personality; author Jack Kerouac; actress Lucy Liu; tennis star John McInroe, and the famous Mae West.

The island of Manhattan, in New York County, wins the prize for being the most densely populated of the five boroughs, with 1.6 million people stuffed into a land area of 23 square miles. Outside the city and also part of the same island as Manhattan are White Plains and New Rochelle. Central Park is situated in Manhattan. Central Park has appeared in numerous films and on several television shows, but it is probably best known for Friends, which ran for ten series.

The Bronx is the northernmost of New York City's five boroughs. It is bisected by the Bronx River into a hilly section on the west side of the river and a flatter section on the east bank. The Bronx also happens to be the only one of the 5 boroughs that is located completely on the mainland. The Bronx Zoo and the New York Botanical Garden are located here.

The Bronx Cheer, believed to have been initiated by Yankee fans, is an utterance much like blowing raspberries. A lot of songs have Bronx in their titles, namely, Bronx Tale by Fat Joe, Bronx Backyard by the Johnny Seven Band, and BX Warrior by Tim Dog.

Staten Island is the southernmost borough of New York City. It is coterminal with Richmond County. The population of Staten Island, compared with the other boroughs, is a paltry 470,000 people. An exciting new development is being planned for Staten Island in the form of Freshkills Park, destined to become New York City's second-largest. The borough has been featured on the television programs, Sex in the City, Grounded for Life, the Blue Bloods, and Law and Order.
