The Essence Of The Refreshed Legal Advice For Nurses Code Of Ethics

By April Briggs

A professional nurse has to use their knowledge, ethical standards and training regularly. This is as they make vital decisions regarding patients. A nurse has to process quickly complex or simple emergencies. This gives them little opportunity to second-guess. In order to offer guidance to these professionals, American Nurses Association created the Ethics Code to be part of the legal advice for nurses.

This code forms part of legal requirements under which nurse practitioners, registered nurse, advanced practice registered nurse, certified registered nurse anaesthetists, licensed practical nurse and midwives operate. Their conduct under the code comes under investigation by the Department of Health. Judgement rests on whether they met or failed to meet the requirements of code while practicing.

Nursing professionals at various categories of professionalism face regulation through the Nursing Board. Licensing and progression through the various professional levels is featured here. As part of process, performance within the tenets of code face determination. In this regard, law firms specializing in health law have to familiarize themselves with the code since they may need to represent a nurse in such an investigation and hearing.

This code is part of the structure that forms the foundation for guidance and standards. It covers how your profession should react to the variety of situations arising in your respective stations of practice. This code sets the standards upon which a judgement of your performance shall be determined. The American Nurses Association last amended this Ethical Code back in 2001. Its revised and latest version was released publicly on January 1, 2015.

This new revised version of ethics code for nurse gears towards helping nurse in a much more modern environment of practice. It addresses the current legal issues in the practice that include infringement of confidentiality issues highlighted in the social media, end of life care treatment and social justice integration into health care policy. They constitute critical issues that require updating because the society and conditions are changing rapidly. They also cover advancement in health care and coverage for new problems coming up.

Three areas have seen changes into Code from the older version. These include provisions One, Two and Three. The three cover the establishment of new guidelines about patient, community and family advocacy. Emphasis falls upon the need to exercise kindness and respect in all professional relationships.

The second area of change covers Provisions Four, Five and Six. These cover new guidelines about delivering and maintaining competent health care. Self-respect and self-care appear here. Accountability and responsibility that nurse professionals shall learn continuously while growing personally and professionally also appear.

Provision Seven to Nine sets forth the broader issues on health within the community. This is at a county, state, national and international level. It covers the advancement of social policy, professional values and education.

This Ethics Code for our nursing profession is a reflection of the ethical heritage pride held within the nursing profession. It serves to promise and guide the society that every nurse will adhere to it always. The code is also a basis on which nurses will be judged when they are accused of unprofessionalism and misconduct. It constitutes the law which every nurse operates.
