The Rationale Behind Halal Certified Food

By Sarah Hamilton

Devout Muslims lead strictly controlled lives. Islamic Law regulates just about every facet of the daily life of a Muslim. This is particularly true of the food that Muslims may consume. Muslims see foodstuffs as much more important than mere nourishment. The foodstuff that one eats or drink also have a very important influence on the spiritual and moral character of the individual. It is for this reason that Muslims will not purchase any product that is not Halal certified food.

In order to get halaal certification, restaurants, manufacturers and suppliers must show that they are keeping to the strict rules set by the Halaal Council. There are Halaal Councils in every country where significant numbers of Muslims live. Getting this certification is not easy and approval normally takes many months. In addition, once granted, it has to be renewed on an annual basis.

There are some types of foodstuffs that are utterly forbidden, even when used as a minor ingredient in the preparation of meals or products. No alcohol may be used, not even when it is an ingredient of medication. Pork products in all its forms are forbidden. Even the derivatives and extracts used by Muslims may only be obtained from an abattoir that is operated strictly according to halaal standards.

It is not only the ingredients that are used in the preparation of meals or other halaal products that are evaluated for certification purposes. The process of production or preparation is also scrutinized. Halaal products may not be contaminated by other foodstuff at any stage. Separate utensils, containers and other cooking wear must be used. It is even necessary to use exclusive cleaning and drying equipment for halaal purposes.

Halaal certification does not require that products and meals are prepared or produced by Muslims. Any business or individual can apply for certification. The applicant is not required to restrict his products to halaal foodstuffs exclusively but cross contamination is not allowed. The Halaal Council strongly recommend that a minimum of two Muslims are part of the process, but this is not a very strict requirement.

There are millions of Muslims and this makes halaal certification important to restaurants and manufacturers. However, it is not just Muslims that prefer halaal foodstuffs. Many people from other cultural backgrounds prefer halaal products. They argue that these products are manufactured and packaged in the most hygienic circumstances possible. It also contains only very high quality ingredients. These quality control measures applicable to all halaal products are reassuring to many consumers.

The market for halaal products and meals is lucrative. It is only to be expected, therefore, that some unscrupulous businesses try to attract Muslim customers even though their products are not officially approved by the Halaal Council. They sidestep this problem by describing their products as halaal friendly or other terms that may create the impression that the business in question has certification. Real halaal products always display the official halaal logo.

Most Muslims try very hard to live their lives strictly according to the Islamic Law, particularly when it comes to what they eat. They believe that these laws are there to protect them from harm and abuse. The laws are not imposed to punish or to control people.
