Discussion About Literacy Volunteering Opportunities

By Margaret Schmidt

Not all of us were lucky to have an education. More people out there grew up without a background like that because those people were unlucky to be penniless. They could not afford the money to for schooling, in turn making them unfortunately illiterate. That will never be their fault unless they preferred it that way. This is Literacy Volunteering Opportunities In Eastside Detroit.

Mostly we get to see children get taught how to read for free. While it is actually not rare to see adults getting taught, it is mostly children because those are easier to teach, their brains are still young and are malleable, making it in our favor when it came to teaching. Kids have this ability to stock up knowledge, unlike adults whose brains are already old.

Be a hero and lend a hand. Expect all kinds of students that you will get when you take up the mantle as a teacher though. While it is likely not impossible to get adult students, the majority would still be children. That could either be a good thing or a bad thing. Children have brains that are adaptable to learning.

Unlike adults whose minds have developed enough to build barriers against new things to absorb. Then again, children can be difficult too, since they have the attention span of squirrels most of the time. You can rarely find a child actually willing to learn and be attentive. Still, teachers were made to need patience so it should not be so hard.

The job of the student is to learn. And while it may seem like what they do is easy since all they do is take in and absorb, hence learning, that actually is a lot of pressure for them. It actually is not easy to forcefully adapt your brain into something completely new. Kids may try their best but all is the same for everyone who has a brain.

Speaking of a different language, think about how hard that is for the students. While fun, that will most likely be hard because they are so used to the fundamentals of their own native language. Changing it to incorporate the new language right into their brains is going to confuse the cells for a while.

That being said, doing this for free is like a heavenly blessing. Those who volunteer would have to have the patience of an angel and heart of one because they are sacrificing their patience without getting anything back. Teaching is never easy. It may just look like talking and talking but it is not so black and white like that.

Now imagine them trying to write. Assuming reading was up there first and they have achieved that. While that makes it easier for them to learn writing, their fingers are still not likely adept in movements that require to write. It literally is the same as if a human suddenly grew a tail. You cannot expect him to start moving it around expertly.

It could be frustrating for the teachers. It actually is ALWAYS frustrating. At times they get mad even though should not but they just simply could not help it.
