Through tools used in bioinformatics, researchers and scientists can promote a better understanding of the evolutionary process through molecular biology. Now, these individuals have taken this research and science a step further in using the application to determine healthy cells from others which may show signs of disease or damage.

When the application is integrated with various forms of data, the application can often assist in cataloging and analyzing biological pathways and networks essential to systems biology. Whereas, when it comes to structural biology, the application is often used to model and analyze the simulation of RNA and DNA. As such, individuals working in this area must have a clear understanding of analytical procedures, math, molecular and systems biology and biochemistry.

In the past, the application had a different meaning and perspective than it does today. For, the name was coined in 1970 by Paulien Hogeweg and Ben Hesper with reference to the study of data management and information processes. As such, the definition placed bioinformatics in a field parallel to biochemistry. Whereas, all aspects of biological data now reside under the umbrella of bioinformatics.

Ultimately, the application is now used mostly in the fields of biochemistry, systems and molecular biology. As a result, the goal is now to study how different activities of a cellular nature are altered or disturbed during different stages of disease. As such, the field has become integral in analyzing and interpreting large pockets of information as related to the study of medicine.
