The Oldest Geologic Map And Mapmakers

By Matthew Perry

When it comes to maps, there are many different types. In one case, a geologic map has nothing to do with travel. For, this type of map refers locations of interest based on geological aspects of different areas, such as that of fossils and rocks. As such, this type of map differs greatly from that of a road atlas or maps used by GPS systems.

Geological mapping includes marking rocks and fossils in different areas to measure the location from the surface of the rock. Structural data on the other hand, such as faults, folds, lineages and plunges are often denoted with dips, strikes and trend markings. As a result, these marks often create a three dimensional effect in the formation.

Surface identification and marking can be somewhat more complex. For, if the object has been exposed to topsoil, backfill, bedrock or other materials, distance can often be miscalculated. As such, the individual measuring the distance from the surface to a geological unit will obtain the wrong information if these materials were included in the measurement.

Currently, the oldest geological map known to exist is that of the Turin Papyrus which has been well preserved since being found. Being a map that dates back to 1150 BCE, it was an important archaeological, geographical, geological and historical find. For, the map depicted stone and gold deposits from different areas of Egypt. In fact, it is believed that the map may have even been integral in the building of the pyramids.

In 1771, another geological map of importance was found which shows parts of Auyergne. In this case, the map was made out of basalt with the mapmakers having used balls, prisms and other items to denote different locations which were rich in various types of rock formations. While there were most likely maps created between 1150 BCE and 1771, this map is still considered the first of its kind to be found in the modern era.

The first of these maps to be produced in the United States was produced by William Maclure in 1809. Maclure, undertook the task of taking a geological survey of the country in 1807. During the survey, Maclure traveled and mapped each state and geological aspects of each which were part of the Union at that time.

The journey which Maclure took to survey and research different areas of the United States took the surveyor across the Allegheny mountains more than fifty times. One outcome of these crossings, a map denoting findings of five classes of rocks which now are believed to only exist in the Eastern states of what is now present-day America.

While most all geological maps created in the United States since that time are similar to the first, some are now laid over topographical maps of the same area to note various comparisons. In addition, while symbols are often used to show fault lines, folds, fossils and other geological data, color masking is often used to denote the exposure of the geological unit from the bedrock. As such, these maps are now used in earthquake sciences, topology, history, archaeology, geology, marine biology and other areas of interest.
