Ways To Begin Developing A Photographic Memory

By Margaret Myers

Being able to remember or recall things at a glance can be an extremely useful skill to have. Developing a photographic memory - also known as an eidetic memory - can be most beneficial in a variety of situations, circumstances or even professions. Those with an exceptional level of such skill are often referred to as eidetickers.

Having such an ability is helpful in situations where things have happened very quickly and information needs to be processed almost instantaneously in order to be accurately recalled later on. An example of such would be in situations of assault or other crimes. Being able to capture an image of the scene in one's mind can make all the difference in the long run.

When this type of thing happens, anyone who is either a witness or victim in the situation who has such a memory, can then assist law enforcement by accurately portraying events as they happened. They would also be able to describe the assailant or criminal in question by naming outstanding physical features that could then help to produce a sketch of the wanted person. These are all aspects that could help speed up an investigation.

Developing this skill is possible, even if it isn't natural at first. It is rumored that military professionals are trained using the Dark Room Method, as it could be used extensively throughout the military. Other methods include the Loci System and the linking method, which are very similar in nature.

The Loci System is one that involves using the bizarre to remember simple things. The mind, it seems, is always more likely to remember things out of the ordinary or unusual. This method, along with the art of linking, is particularly useful when it comes to remembering lists or even directions. Associating landmarks or particular items with a crazy story makes it easier to remember.

The Dark Room Method is a very simple exercise which has proven to be effective with consistency. Daily practice is recommended over a period of four to five weeks to really benefit from the process. You will need a dark room to sit in with a torch or lamp that you can switch on at off momentarily. You will also need a book and some card that has a window cut out of it to create a space through which you can see a paragraph in the book.

Place the card with the cutout space directly over a paragraph of text in the book to memorize. Sitting in the dark room, allow the eyes to adjust to the darkness at first and then turn on the light source for a moment, looking at the text in the cutout space. Turn the light back off and the image of the text should remain before the eyes.

Doing this repeatedly for 15 minutes will ensure that the paragraph is easily memorized. As a result of this exercise, other things will become easier to remember at just a glance. As with any skill, practicing is the key to making it work long-term. Bear in mind, however, that this type of memory can be flawed and should not be used as an exclusive source of information.
