Bullying is such a prevalent problem in schools and on playgrounds that some parents resort to home schooling to try and keep their children safe. Other parents teach youngsters the basics of self defense that may include fist fighting and wrestling. A lot of schools have removed gym and physical fitness from their curriculum. Martial arts classes are a way to get a sedentary youngster off the couch, working muscles, and burning calories.

Many parents worry that their children suffer from low self-esteem. They may not know how to help them, but enrolling them in a program that rewards and recognizes accomplishments is a good way to start. Youngsters see the progress they are making when they earn more advanced belts and master difficult maneuvers.

One of the common complaints adults of a certain age have about young people is the lack of respect they observe. Some children routinely talk back to their parents and show a disregard for even the basics of common courtesy. Martial arts has a strict code regarding respect toward the instructors in charge. Classroom violators will quickly learn to listen and respond respectfully.

Even though people are used to seeing actors fight their way through crowds of opponents at the drop of a hat, this is really an art dedicated to nonviolence. Children are taught peaceful methods to resolve difficult situations. Employing defensive training should be the last resort.

Children who bully often become adults who bully. It is a good idea to teach methods for combating bullying behaviors early. Unfortunately, as adults kids may face the same aggressive behavior in employers and others in authority.
