Cake & 3 Mistakes To Know When Baking

By Jennifer Marie Anderson

Those who are skilled in the pastry arts will be able to prepare some of the best cakes imaginable. Not only are they layered high, in certain cases, they are moist and sweet enough to where anyone can get into them. Without question, skill like this is obtained through experience, in addition to the best education imaginable. However, for those who are new to this particular endeavor, there is a level of caution worth taking up.

Have you ever bitten into cake, only to find that it is too dry to truly be enjoyed? What about leaving it undercooked to the point where it's not as savory as it should be? Results like these come about through improper cooking, which is why experience is such a crucial factor. With that said, if you're going to devote time to the process of baking cake, here are 3 of the most common mistakes that could be made during this rather demanding process.

If you're going to prepare a cake, it's important to know how to mix ingredients. For example, after you incorporate the butter, you're probably going to want to mix everything else that you have, flour and eggs included. However, under-mixing can result in too solid a foundation, while over-mixing can leave something that is perhaps too thin. Simply put, if you're going to about creating a cake, it's important to find a balance and adhere to it.

If you're truly dedicated to the art of cake baking, you should know to keep the oven door closed at all times. There have been a few times where chefs have opened said door, just to get a good look at the cake, only to find that it had fallen. The reason for this is that the baking process requires a consistent temperature, which is thrown off when external climates are brought into the mix. In order to lower the risk of poor-quality cakes being made, refrain from opening the door in question.

Finally, you may cut into the cake too soon after it's been taken out of the oven. One of the cardinal rules of cake - and this is one that all aspiring chefs should know - is that it must be given an appropriate amount of time within a reasonable climate. Without allowing this, your cake will fall flat, whether it physically does so or not. Stay patient before you cut into your culinary delight; it will be that much better as a result.
